The long - pending demand for a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Virudhunagar district has, at last, fructified. The Minister of State for Human Resource Development, D. Purandeswari, on Thursday announced that the school would start functioning from the current academic year.
It was a befitting tribute to former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, on his 108th birth anniversary celebrated as Education Development Day.
The school would temporarily function from a marriage hall in the town. The Minister, along with Virudhunagar MP B. Manicka Tagore and the Collector, V.K. Shanmugam, inspected the marriage hall where wooden partitions were made for classrooms. "Based on the registration of students, teachers will be appointed," she told reporters.
Mr. Tagore said that initially the school would have classes up to fifth standard. On the permanent building for the school, the Minister said the district administration had identified a 10 - acre land, to be donated by a philanthropist. The building would come up at a cost of over Rs. 7 crore.
Earlier, responding to Mr. Tagore's demand, the Minister said that her Ministry was actively considering setting up of a polytechnic at Sivakasi. The State government should come forward to give land free of cost or else the institution could be established on a public - private partnership.
She gave away certificates and awards to first three ranks holders in 10th and 12th public examinations of all schools in Virudhunagar Parliamentary constituency.
